Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services Recruitment (DPSCS)

Disaster Recovery and HA Data Center Environment

Our Winning Award

AlxTel is excited to announce that we won Maryland Disaster Recovery and  HA Data Center Environment contract of amount $327,749.30. The practice of DR revolves around events that are serious in nature. These events are often thought of in terms of natural disasters, but they can also be caused by systems or technical failure or by humans carrying out an intentional attack. They are significant enough to disrupt or completely stop critical business operations for a period of time.

Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services

The Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services protects the public, its employees, and detainees and offenders under its supervision. The Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services is one of the largest departments in Maryland with nearly 12,000 employees and a budget of more than $1 billion. In order to fulfill our mission of promoting safety, we have increased security at our institutions while leading the way in innovative restorative justice projects that will help offenders reintegrate into society upon release. Public Safety operates 19 institutions, including several pretrial facilities, as well as 42 Parole and Probation offices throughout the state.

  • DPSCS primary objective is to ensure safety so that all Marylanders can enjoy living and working in the state. We are achieving this by increasing security in our institutions and supplying offenders and former-offenders the tools necessary to stay out of the criminal justice system.
  • We are also working with partner agencies, sharing important intelligence information in order to reduce crime and violence.
  • Around the state, we work in the communities to which many of our offenders will one day return. Offenders are out in the community every day, performing public works and sustainability projects that save taxpayer dollars and help preserve Maryland’s natural resources.

Disaster Recovery and HA Data Center Environment

Disaster recovery (DR) is an organization’s ability to respond to and recover from an event that negatively affects business operations. The goal of DR methods is to enable the organization to regain use of critical systems and IT infrastructure as soon as possible after a disaster occurs. To prepare for this, organizations often perform an in-depth analysis of their systems and create a formal document to follow in times of crisis. This document is known as a disaster recovery plan. Most professional organizations invest in some form of data protection services as an integral part of their data center disaster recovery plan, often using a data backup and restore service to protect business-critical data. Large professional organizations often spend a significant portion of their budget on data center disaster recovery plans in order to preclude potentially crippling losses in revenue that may result from the inability to conduct operations following a disaster.

AlxTel have several options for controlling the environment in a data center:

Fire suppression

Temperature controls

Temperature control starts with the hardware we use in a data center. Servers contain fans and internal cooling mechanisms designed to prevent overheating. Depending on the data center’s location, may benefit from additional temperature controls, such as chillers, hot and cold aisle containment and airflow management.

Electricity monitoring

Fire suppression

Fire suppression and protection should be part of data center’s security controls. Fire can permanently damage servers, leading to data loss. Since a data center is full of racks and servers, the fire suppression system you use needs to put out fires without causing extensive damage.

Temperature controls

Electricity monitoring

Static electricity buildup from dry conditions can cause a power surge. In addition to controlling humidity levels in data center, electricity monitoring will help us keep tabs on electrical levels. If the power surges, you can take action before significant damage occurs.

Instant recovery

Organizations can implement a variety of disaster recovery methods, or combine several, depending on the nature of the disaster, the type of organization, its infrastructure, and its own disaster recovery plan:

  • Backup solutions are the simplest type of DR and entail storing data at an off site data center, or on a removable drive. However, just backing up data provides only minimal business continuity help, as the IT infrastructure itself is not backed up.

  • In these types of DR solutions, an organization sets up a basic infrastructure in an alternative facility that provides a place for employees to work after a natural disaster or fire. It can help with business continuity, allowing a company’s operations to continue, but doesn’t provide data management, data protection, or recovery. Cold site solutions should be combined with other methods of disaster recovery.

  • Hot site solutions facilitate data management by maintaining up-to-date copies of data at all times. Hot sites are time-consuming to set up and more expensive than cold sites, but they can dramatically reduce down time, which can save costs in the long run.

  • Organizations can back up certain operations and data or even a working replica of their entire computing environment on off-site virtual servers and virtual machines that are unaffected by physical disasters.

  • Instant recovery is similar to point-in-time copies, except that instead of copying data from your database, instant recovery takes a snapshot of an entire virtual machine.
